Hello Summer

With spring leading into summer, clouds opening up and temperatures rising, the call to reach for the skies is inevitable.  We should not forget that we are living in strange times and that things are not “As usual”. With many airfields simply closed there is an added aspect of flight preparation and briefing, but we should also look in the mirror and have a critical look at ourselves. When was the last time we flew? How many landings do I have in the last 30 days? Would it be wise to talk to an instructor and go shoot a few touch-and-goes?

Also for those of us who are lucky to have access to a private aircraft there are many questions. When did she last fly? Are we talking about months? How old is the fuel in those fuel tanks? What’s the condition of the fuel hoses? A good leak check (after some time of inactivity) not only before starting but also after starting is not a bad idea? Starting an engine after some time of inactivity also gets the fuel moving? Have you drained the fuel tanks? was there any water in there?

Make sure you allow the engine to warm up gradually and do not race to get into the air. Some drops of water in the fuel lines tend to go through the carburetor exactly at the wrong moment. Especially when our flying skills may be a bit rusty due to Covid-19 and winter we should not allow this to extend to our safety awareness and procedures.

Be safe out there!
