What is Puma UL-94 Aviation Gasoline?

UL94 is 94+ Motor Octane eco-friendly, unleaded fuel, developed especially for aviation purposes by PUMA Aviation, the first European producer of lead-free aviation gasoline UL94.

UL94 contains no Tetraethyllead and meets provisions of the ASTM D7547 and DEF-STAN 91-090 latest issue for Standard Specification for Unleaded Aviation Gasolines.

UL94 Properties and benefits

Comparing Avgas UL94 with Autogas (Mogas), UL94 is not only greener and cleaner for the environment, but measurably better for aircraft engines.

First of all, Aviation Gasoline is specifically developed for the aviation industry, under strict aviation fuel specifications, e.g. ASTM D7547 while Mogas meets the car gasoline standards (e.g. ASTM International D4814 or EN228)

Autogas may contain up to 10-15% ethanol upon the intended use for consumption, depending on the country standards. Ethanol use above 1% in aircraft is not recommended by engine producers, Lycoming for instance. As such Avgas UL94 contains no ethanol which may have an adverse effect for fuel system components.

Especially in airports, aviation gasoline is to be subject to other high aviation standards : Fuel handling, storage standards and insurance provisions.

Most importantly, Avgas has essential differences versus Mogas in the performance and Chemical characteristics

Range

The Range of the aircraft will be greater, as Avgas has much higher octane vs. octane rating when compared to Autogas

Cleaner Spark

UL94 Unleaded Avgas is made from high quality, lower boiling hydrocarbon components resulting in virtually no sparkplug deposits, fewer exhaust contaminates, and lower aromatics content. Mogas is made with many higher boiling aromatic compounds which, when used in an aircraft, are inadvertently released into the atmosphere without catalytic converters to cleanse the by-products of combustion from a piston engine.

Vapor Lock

Avgas specifications reduce carburettor icing risk in variable weather/temperature conditions. Avgas has a low vapor pressure (5.5 to 7.1 psi), where Autogas RVP is higher (7.5 to even 15 psi in certain states and at certain times) which can lead to vapor lock issues

Avgas has less gum forming compounds than Autogas, whose production specifications are less strict. For example, Mogas may form larger amounts of gums (more dirt) during storage because of chemical compounds, which tend to oxidize.

Can this fuel be used on my plane?

Unleaded aviation gasoline is designed for use in engines and aircraft that are specifically approved by the engine and aircraft manufacturers.

As fuel approvals are strictly regulated to keep operational safety, it has to be checked if UL94 may be used in a particular type of airplane or helicopter.
